Meet the Team

  • Ciara Jackson

I am a flutist, therapeutic sound practitioner, community music facilitator and educator with a life time’s dedication to playing, studying, and living in music. I enjoy a varied work timetable from tutoring flute at local schools, to providing sound sessions at yoga studios.

I have achieved an MA in music and level 3 diploma in therapeutic sound.

Since I was a young child, playing the flute has allowed me to express myself beyond words. I have a personal love of woodwind instruments, and am particularly interested in the nurturing benefits that music can provide.

  • Rowan Bryn

I am a community musician, drum circle facilitator, and rhythm enthusiast. I play percussion, guitar and piano and also love to experiment with electronic music production.

I have an MA in Community Music and have completed Village Music Circle’s drum circle facilitation training, as well as Rhythm2Recovery’s ‘Using Rhythm in Therapeutic Contexts’ training.

I am particularly interested in the effect that music has on our health and wellbeing, how rhythm and music is used in other cultures throughout the globe, and the philosophy of music, sound and silence.

Our Story

Ciara and Rowan met during their master’s degrees in 2017 and have been on a musical journey together ever since. They initially connected over a shared love of folk music, and they began playing Irish and other types of folk music together. Inspired by the thriving folk scene, they moved to Ciara’s hometown of Belfast in 2019. They continued to explore their own musical journeys, with Rowan studying African rhythm, and Ciara studying therapeutic sound, drawing on ancient Indian/Buddhist philosophies of using vibration as a healing tool.

Their combined love of learning more and more about music, has led them to study modern science alongside non-western philosophies and they incorporate the knowledge of what they learn through study and lived experience of musical exploration in all their workshops.

Their own musical practice continues to evolve; they create music inspired by diverse influences such as Irish folk, African rhythm, jazz improvisation, ambient soundscapes, and electronic music production.

We encourage curiosity in all our workshops. We recognize that we are all unique and experience the world in different ways. We encourage you to question how you personally experience the world of music and sound.

What sounds are you drawn to? How do different sounds make you feel? What activities are you drawn to? When we pay attention in the present moment, we may be surprised.

Through a curious approach, we can begin to connect to our own creative voice. We believe that self-expression is integral to music-making. Through creative exploration, we can discover our own unique way of expressing ourselves, and create sounds that we really feel connected to.

Connection is at the heart of what we do. When we are curious and creative, we can connect to ourselves, our feelings, our emotions. When we share our vulnerability in a safe environment, we can form connections with others that go beyond words.

At Sound Unearthed we believe in the power of music, sound, and vibration as a tool for connection, well-being and educational fun.
